My approach in teaching English, Russian or French is based on rather relaxed way of appreciating the beauty of a language rather than on boring drilling and following strict adherence to the rules. It can be achieved in different ways- through cultural awareness, songs, saying, proverbs, poems...what ever comes across. To learn language through textbooks is probably a good idea that deserves respect...and still you would not feel free to use the language simply becuase you don't know the whereabouts and can't remember the damned rule..
Maybe I am wrong and there is a lot of discussion that could be involved...Who knows?? Being able to work with different methods of teaching back in the USSR and here in the West I've come to the poinnt that you can't just learn a language ...you need to know more than that- history, traditions...etc...Sorry if this sounds a bit pathetic and tedious...

Approaches, technics, methods, ways - when I was a student of the Universe there lots of debate on how to teach a foreign language. You know most students after two or three years of studying begin feeling confident enough to become personal tutors for school-children, students from non-linguistic higher schools and for adults as well. I didn't escape this phase either. Those years of being a personal English tutor gave me much to think over. Gradually I came to a very interesting conclusion as to the matter of teaching approach. CMS is a breakthrough of course. What would you comment on that - one student of mine was a brilliant success for the sole reason - he never did drillings and anything boring. He was the only student who managed not merely understand the approach offered but to practice it in his daily exercises. What is the catch? Never practice a single English word without feeling by own inner subtle nerves entire sense which this word bears. To say nothing of phrases and monologues. Wherever he was, he converted the environment into English terms and analogs. Especially at home it was the easiest way to train himself, all Russian words he was accustomed to use talking to his dearest, he replaced their English analogs. The same was with the phrases. We all perfectly know what to say in this or that specific situation in our mother-tongue, and this is great! The only thing left to do was to link every type of situation to what the English generally speak in the same one. Thanks God, there are common signs in a number of our daily routines. They are also common for most of mankind. This is universal. We work, we rest, we eat, we sleep - as if most people live the same lives - just sounds we produce with our mouths are different.
He is a pilot and only flies flights to foreign countries. Very good at talking to foreign ATCs and aerodrome services. When he first addressed to me asking for lessons his level of English knowledge was pre-elementary. )

It was so nice to read your passage!! And you are right - it's rather difficult and challenging to teach others. Anyway there are definitely obvious rewards- those students who do not need too much but guidance- the rest they will do themselves..I believe that this is excatly what good teaching=guiding is all about!.

English patience!?
I was driving home this afternoon.The car in front started indicating right turn. No problem, I stopped the car and was waiting for the car in front to clear the lane. But the car in front would not move, becasue the other car(opposite direction) blocked the entrance in the drive. The traffic statred building up. The situation was ridiculous, as both single lanes were brought to a standstill. The driver in the car, that had blocked the entrance, was an old woman waiting for...After a couple of minutes I blew the horn, as nobody was eager to do so...Eventually the old woman realised the obsrtuction she had caused and moved a couple of inches forward!!!
The moral: English drivers are VERY PATIENT to other drivers or ?...

If a lady shows the right turn, it doesn't mean that she is going to turn left yet. She might drive straight ahead as well :-)

I've tried to fancy what it might mean for a pilot:

Able to make money for your company literally from the air. Without me your vehicles wouldn't be able to carry passengers in the end. So I'll make your airplanes bring back the cash you've spend for them, and begin to earn profit for your company. Besides of the travelling fees you'll earn additional gain. You wouldn't have to return money to customers and pay penalties for broken liabilities. And what is most profitable you wouldn't have to by a new airplane after each landing. :-)
