I believe there is no reason to feel shy to say something incorrect.
*************
That's well right!! The more and oftener you practise the better your language would be!
However it's rather tiring to type every time you need "to say" something here and you could easily make silly mistakes. When talking, on the other hand, you would probably avoid those and make different ones...;-)))

In fact, no news! As usually - ladies and Gentelmen! This is your captain Boris speaking! Welcome on board of B-737-800. Our flight to Moscow is going to be at 35000 feet with speed in average 450 NM per hour. The weather is so-so, but I promise you to be there in good time! And bla-bla-bla...

"I think i forgot to turn the gas off, we'll have to go back and check!"

"Sit back you earthworms, those of us in the driving seats are about to commit aviation."

"I feel the need; the need for speed" and high five.

"Where's the bloody key to start this thing"

"Good luck everyone, hope to see you in ..."

Our SOP prescribes that captain is responsible for talking to passengers. But he can delegate this responsibility if consider appropriate.

If you like this, why not? Here in Russia most of co-pilots do not want ( or can not ) understand their real position. It is like a type of mind - this is my captain,s responsibility! Trust me - it is a big mistake and now a realy good time to change it! If you are not agree - just prove it.

RE:WEATHER

Heavy storms batter parts of UK

Heavy rain and storms have swept over southern and eastern England.
In one incident a low rise block of flats was struck by lightning in Wembley, north west London, severely damaging the roof.
The overnight rain, with patchy thunder and lightning, stretched from south Wales, through Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset, to East Sussex.
The storms hit the capital between 6am and 8am on Sunday, before moving north. By mid morning the rain had reached the Midlands and the Wash, with storms in places.
London Fire Brigade said the first call to the block of flats was at 7.07am. Fifteen appliances went to the scene in Barnhill Road, Wembley, and at one point half the roof of the three storey block was alight.
There were no reports of casualties.
The heavy rain followed storms in the south west which caused disruption on Saturday.

Well right!!
Respect is the key to any language progress both from students and teachers and of course hard work."Learn, learn and learn..."Lenin. :-)))

I completely agree with you, Mila. The problem is in our psychology: it is shame for us to look droll. What about me, I have been studying English for many years, so I can read, I understand the texts and I can write. But when I had to visit some European country, I felt myself like a deaf mute. My comprehension was always behind the speech, which was turned to me, and my answers were only monosyllabic!
My lovely son (certainly a pilot) ignores a grammar sometimes, but he speaks English and understands it better than me.
What is easier on your opinion: to teach me to speak English or to teach my son English Grammar? As for me, the second is simpler.
Correct my mistakes, please.

Hi Mila, and everyone! I'm back here for a while. Fortunately I got an opportunity to take a little breath.
I believe your respondent is right saying: "What is easier on your opinion: to teach me to speak English or to teach my son English Grammar? As for me, the second is simpler..."
It's just the way I'm going. First I made myself to speak English, then they forced me to learn grammar. Practice is the best way I think (respect to Murphy). Watching TV programs and movies is extremely useful to. On the whole It's almost no matter what to do. The point is to do anything though and don't stop. Even when it seems to you that there is no progress at all.
What is interesting I'm still not keen on "language of grammar", and can hardly follow teachers when they discuss it. Strange people speaking bird's language. :-) I prefer to speak English.

Hi MSL!
Nice to see you again!
MSL you are right- the more you PRACTICE the BETTER your communication would be- internet, youtubes, forums just a few to mention. GRAMMAR is not that crucial as far as you make yourself understandable enough, so VOCABULARY (preferably up to date), PRONUNCIATION and CONFIDENCE that you are actually communicating!
Speaking and Listening are naturally the most difficult skills in mastering any language.
So keep on practicing whenever and wherever you are!!

You can explain grammar and you can learn grammar and still wouldn't be able to TALK!! It doesn't mean some teachers are good and some are not. Unless you are stuck in the situation when you NEED to talk = to survive, you wouldn't be able to put together those bits and pieces of grammar and Vocabulary together...
In the situation when you are more or less could remember the main important rules- tenses, word order, auxilary verbs... to make up all sorts of questions, you need to build up your speech patterns, looking through anything that comes your way:from native speakers' forums or simple textbooks like Streamline, films... and just drill it "like a parrot". Gradually you should be able to notice that grammar is correct and your vocabulary is impressive. It takes some time, though, and commitment.
But it's worth it.

Hi Mila and everybody! You are right - 100 %! In my opinion we have to use any possibility to talk with each other. When I,ve been in India I had no choice - just talk! Almost every day you should communicate with somebody - English everywhere! After some time you are starting to fill it! Spirit of English - such amasing filling! But anyway, there is a problem with Gramma but Your Magisty Practice with you! Bingo!!! And step by step you are moving forward!
To MSL. I wish you to change your attitude to this aspect - nobody cares where are you flying now! Domestic or International - what is the problem? Just one thing - you need it or not! That is it! I am sure - you will get it and you do not need to find some tricky words using dictionary - I think so...

I have to admit you are right after all. Just one thing - I fly with a new captain in a new company this time. That's why I guess I should settle more urgent things first. But when I feel it's appropriate I'll surely discuss it. Though there are a good news. Anyway I have a chance to speak English to our mechanics right now.

I think the best way to perceive English is to watch English speaking films combined with Russian subtitles.

Well, this is certainly an option- watching films with subtiteles!!
One more thing I forgot to add about learning English. Very often it turns out that we do not understand what are people talking about, as we don't know cultural REALITIES. Without it we might argue on and on about grammar, vocab and pronunciation and having no clue what does actually " being Greek" mean to English people...
That's why any source needs some time for additional research into culture, history and everyday aspect of life..
