Normally you would have lived in the country at least for 5 years to become more or less comfortable with the system and their way of living...I am not absolutely certain as this is just an average estimate...I know that some people have lived here more than 15 years and you could say for sure "They are Russians". While the others are much quicker to adapt and accept "the rules of the game".

An anecdote.
Why nobody can win a victory over Russians? Scientists found out that Roman languages are 3/4 briefer than Russian. That's why commands are quicker to give and respond in western armies. But during battle Russians switch to "MAT" that is much more briefer than other language.

hmm.. according those last posts which says that this forum is rather best from the best of anyone on this avia.ru: as i though before, main target was "to brush anyone's english" (sorry for my lower case of writing, but i don't like upper letters, and now can't see the reason to hide it nomore). so, that target means that this forum should be an open place for any people who would like talking english, nomatter how brilliant their skill is. not minding those passages about "гопник" (i'm not so great in english how Mark Twain was (upper cased in respect of him), so, can't get all nuances in other's speeches, but once i got an idea that my nickname and that untranslatable "гопник" was in relation somehow, but at least i dropped that paraniod, because where you can find some "гопник" who can say a word in english? so, where was i... i'm trying to pull the sense that may be, it may help for others here, if you/we are going to start talking some matters about civil aviation? i mean - may be some opinions how some carriers does their business, how they do sales, operations... something profitable. otherwise we've got a private club for couple of eggheads whose english is perfect already. what do ya think?

Morning!
A question for those who live abroad. Since USSR we are used to think that life in western countries is much better than in our country. But nowadays everything has changed a lot. And we also live in capitalistic environment and lifestyle. First of all when comes to life in big cities indeed. Of course we have our own well known national features like sluggish and heartless official services and so on.
But what about dark side of life in western world? Is it really as comfortable to live there as we've been thinking? What disturbs you most of all?

PS. As for the HOLIDAYS. We have a lot of them and love to celebrate them pretty much. :-)

Unable to catch a connection between topics and participant's level of English.
As I understood not all of participants have a direct relation to the civil aviation. Discussion of narrow professional items maybe boring to them. I think we'd better concentrate on more common things.

генеральный директор
заместитель генерального директора
председатель совета директоров
владелец корпорации (i guess, that naming him as an owner of the company would be too familiar). thank's for any help.

Everybody flies as a passenger. And most people feel anxious during flight. I suppose people want to know more about complicated and unknown system, that they entrust their lives. By the way that's why journalists love to write about aviation and especially about accidents so much. Others are just amateurs or former airmen, who want to feel the involvement in aviation.

As far as I know:

Генеральный директор — CEO – Chief of executive officer
Заместитель гендиректора — Deputy CEO
Председатель совета директоров - Сhairman of board of directors
Владелец корпорации (акционер) — Owner or Shareholder

But this information need to be checked.

Hi everybody
Posted the message and it's gone astray :-)))
Yes CEO- Chief executive Officer
or Managing Director
Deputy CE
Chairman (Chair) of the Board (of Directors)
Major /Key shareholder
couldn't find the right example for the Owner...

Re: communication.
Agree with MSL that we are here because one way or the other we all love sky, being other pilots or passangers, and planes either in the air or on the ground. And of course we like to talk about everything else in English;-)))..otherwise we could take part in other forums and talk about aviation stuff only.
I beleive that if within certain period of time you could feel that your level of language competence has boosted I am sure you would be very happy! Never stop learning -this is my personal motto;-))))

Well, it's so obvious that there are certain pitfalls and "dark horses".

Shal we do the following: as this is rather large issue to cover in one post, we can do it gradually by comparing here and there.
banks and banking system- a "dark horse" the world of Capital
unemployement and forced retirement- a pitfall, the world of Misery
People are individuals, even within the family, the world of Singles
To have something you need to work really hard..., the world of Hard Labour

Holidays - where to go and when?
----------
Hi!
It mostly depends on nature of a holiday and season. For example May's holidays (1-st of May and Victory day) people like to celebrate outdoors – roasting shashlyk (marinated meet) or simply working at their country cottages. New year folks traditionally celebrate in the bosom of the family. But recently emerged a new tradition – to go on short voyage to one of the northern countries and have winter funs (skiing, skating and so on). For instance it might be motherland of Santa – Laplandia, Finland.

This might be true if there is only one owner of a company. But in general, relations between owners and executive bodies are regulated by corporate law and organization chart. They cant be changed at will of only one shareholder.

Yes, that' right.. Then he might be called as Chair...:-)))One way or the other it's all about senior or top executives..
Holidays
We talk about holidays when we have 2 weeks twice a year and try to escape somewhere, as the weather in England is not that great at all. Cold and humid winters and mostly grey skies drive people crazy. That what we call "to escape the winter blues"..Although the temperature might not be exactly below zero as in Russia but it feels nasty because of this damn humidity...
Well in summer time I usually come back to Russia to see my long life friends and family.
MSL I think you forgot another rather Russian way of celebrating May Public holidays- to plant potatoes:-))) a sort of massive nature escape...

I believe that passion for planting work and living in village roots from agricultural ancestors of majority of our people. It's a social rudiment, arised because of industrialization of the country that had been held too fast. I take it as a kind of hobby, but devoted "dachniks" get hurt when I say so. They believe that dacha is a real substance of their feeding.
